WRITING AS A MOM
WRITING AS A MOM
Being a writer is a beautiful, fulfilling, and often maddening calling. Writing isn’t just a job; it is a necessity, a passion that runs through my veins. If I’m not writing, I’m reading, and when I’m not reading, well, you can bet I’m itching to get back to writing. The sweet pandemonium of motherhood fills my days: cooking meals, washing endless piles of laundry, and now, adding three kids into this equation, each with their own unique demands and quirks, creates the perfect recipe for confusion. But amidst this chaos, I have found a way to balance it all. This is my story of navigating the world of writing as a mom.
THE BEAUTIFUL MADNESS OF WRITING AND MOTHERHOOD
Writing for me is not just a task, but a calling. It is an unquenchable thirst that demands attention, much like my children. My day starts early, often before the sun peeks over the horizon. The quiet of the early morning is my sanctuary, a time when the house is still, and the only sound is the gentle tapping of my keyboard. But as the sun rises, so does the energy in my house. Breakfast needs to be made, school lunches packed, and the kids need to be wrangled out of bed and into their clothes.
Once the kids are off to school or settled with their activities, the house falls into a deceptive calm. This is my prime time for tackling household chores. It is a whirlwind of cleaning, washing, and tidying up the mess left in the wake of my kids’ morning rush.
STEALING MOMENTS FOR CREATIVITY
Finding time to write amidst the chaos requires a bit of creativity and a lot of flexibility. I have learned to steal moments whenever I can. Whether it is jotting down ideas while waiting in the carpool line or typing out a few paragraphs as dinner simmers on the stove, every moment counts. One of my favorite strategies is napping during the day. It might sound counterintuitive, but a quick power nap can be a game-changer. It rejuvenates me and prepares me for the long night ahead. Because once the kids are in bed, the real magic happens. When the world sleeps, I write.
I come alive when the house is quiet and my little ones are tucked in bed. The stillness of the night is my creative haven. It is just me, my thoughts, and my trusty laptop. The silence allows my ideas to flow freely, uninterrupted by the demands of the day. But, of course, even in the dead of night, life as a mom is never predictable.
There was this one time, a night like any other, when I was engrossed in writing. The words were flowing, and I was in the zone. Then, out of nowhere, my youngest daughter appeared, her sleepy eyes barely open. Before I could react, she tripped over the power cord, sending my laptop crashing to the floor. It broke into two pieces right before my eyes. I was devastated. But as any mom knows, resilience is part of the job description. After ensuring she was okay and putting her back into bed, I took a deep breath and assessed the damage. My laptop was beyond repair. Undeterred, I quietly tiptoed into the bedroom, borrowed my husband’s laptop, and continued writing. Because when you’re a writer, the show must go on.
BALANCING THE ART OF JUGGLING
Balancing writing with motherhood is an ongoing challenge, but it is one I’ve learned to embrace. It is about setting priorities, being flexible, and finding joy in the little victories. There are days when the laundry pile seems insurmountable, and deadlines loom like dark clouds. But I have learned to let go of perfection. The house might not always be spotless, and sometimes dinner is takeout, but that is okay. What matters is that my family is happy and my creative spirit is nourished.
Involving my husband and kids in my writing process has also been a delightful surprise. They love to hear stories about the characters I’m creating, and their uninhibited imaginations often spark new ideas. Sometimes, they even offer suggestions for plot twists or character names. It is a wonderful way to merge my two worlds and show them that creativity has no bounds.
CONCLUSION
Writing is not just fun; it is the thread that weaves through my days, connecting the various facets of my life. Yes, there are challenges. There are moments of frustration and exhaustion. But there are also moments of pure joy—when a story comes together, when characters find their voice, when my kids cheer me on. It is all worthwhile in the end. The late nights, the stolen moments, the balancing act—each part of this journey is a testament to the beauty of writing and motherhood. So, to all the moms out there juggling multiple roles, remember: you’re not alone. Embrace the confusion, find your rhythm, and keep writing, because at the heart of it all, writing is our way of capturing the magic of everyday life and sharing it with the world. Don’t give up! Your stories matter! Your voice matters!
